From entering Ihram at the Miqat to completing Halq or Taqsir, here is a simple walkthrough of the four rites of Umrah for first-time pilgrims travelling from the UK.
Umrah is often called the "lesser pilgrimage". It can be performed at any time of the year and consists of four main rites. If this is your first time, the steps below will help you feel prepared before you fly from the UK.
1. Ihram
Ihram is the sacred state you enter before crossing the Miqat. Men wear two plain white unstitched cloths, while women wear modest everyday clothing. Make your intention (niyyah) for Umrah and begin reciting the Talbiyah: Labbayk Allahumma labbayk…
Flights from the UK to Jeddah pass the Miqat in the air, so most pilgrims change into Ihram at home or at the airport and make their intention when the crew announces the Miqat.
2. Tawaf
On reaching Masjid al-Haram, perform Tawaf by circling the Kaaba seven times anti-clockwise, starting and ending at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). After Tawaf, pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, and drink Zamzam water.
3. Sa'i
Sa'i is walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, remembering the search of Hajar (peace be upon her) for water. Begin at Safa and finish at Marwah.
4. Halq or Taqsir
Men shave their head (Halq) or trim their hair (Taqsir); women trim a fingertip's length of hair. With this, your Umrah is complete and the restrictions of Ihram are lifted.
